PRAISING WOMEN

God save me from praising women
Who make me into an idol,
A substitute for life’s lost dreams
And broken promises,
And then damn my feet of clay.

God save me from praising women
Who seduce me with myths,
Fantasies created by their own need,
Demanding nothing in return
Except the promise of a lifetime.

God save me from praising women,
Needy women, clinging women, desperate women,
Desperate me,
Whose salvation is in the need
And the myth
And the lie.

(I wrote this second poem as a response to the controversy over Tasering an unruly fan at a baseball game in Philadelphia)

On Spring, Baseball and Tasers

An electric jolt is all the rage
To calm when reason takes its leave,
But I'm no fan of overkill,
Especially on a summer's eve

When cries of "Play ball!" fill the air
And men with gloves play catch and throw,
While others swing a mighty bat
To see how far a ball will go.

On field of green and paths of brown
The game's enough to thrill each fan.
The electric spark is in the air,
No need to fire it into man.

So kick back and enjoy the game,
Put those taser guns away.
If some nut jumps onto the field
And interferes with ball in play,

Just run him down and cart him off.
Ban him for a game or five.
But please don't give the dolt a shock,
We want him gone but still alive .
