                        TODAY

Today is not yesterday and it is not yet tomorrow,
Today is not my birth day,
Nor any day from which I might want to borrow.
Today is not the day I ceased to be a virgin
And not the day of my conception,
It's not the day I relieved that first exciting urgin'
nor is it a day of more importance
than the day I suffered my first rejection.
Today is not the first day I saw sunshine,
nor is it any way like
the day I first knew love was mine.
My today means absolutely nothing to you,
because you do not have to understand
That today I have a million things to do.
I must admit that today is not
the day I would want it to be
Not the most important from all the lot.
Yet, today is special because I'm not so sure
If it will be the one most special to me
The day that will be most pure of all the pure.
But one thing I am certain of,
This day is my day to relish as I will
A day that I may or may not fall in love.
A day that may give me a special thrill
to enjoy the glory of another dawn
watching the sun rise over an eastern hill.
But more important as a day at all
Is that this day will be my day -
Which I shall live as though it is my last
A day to recollect what has and hasn't been
A day to enjoy my sometimes imperfect past.
